Hi, I havent been on for a while, but now we are getting organized to leave in about 2 weeks & I have a question if some one can advise. We have just bought a laptop & Im not sure which is the best way to go with internet supply. I was thinking of either virgin or vodaphone as they seem to be offering better deals. I know virgin piggy back off optus, so coverage should be good { travelling up the east coast from victoria.} But I was told that vodaphone has a faster modem & they use optus & telsra towers when out of zone from their own. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with either. I have heard that virgin are bad to deal with if you have a technical problem. I guess you can see I am pretty new to this. Hope someone can advise.

The only time that any network will access another is for making 000 cals.

When you compare values for the various networks, don't go on price alone. Get their coverage maps and see if the networks will cover your routes. Maybe you will get good coverage along the coast but when you are away from the you will be looking for something better. If you are prepared too jumk your system in a gew years then go for one of the cheapies and get Telstra later.

Thanks Peter. That is what I am looking at for the east coast. Next year when we do the west coast I know I will have to go to telstra & hopefully there will be better deals for pre pay. I guess I am also a bit reluctant to go telstra as when we have dealt with them in years past with our land line we have always problems with them. Even now our home computer is with tpg [who are brilliant to deal with & cheap] but we have had major problems & its been telstra having hardware problems 3 times now since christmas.
I am looking at coverage & I'm not finding overall coverage maps, except for voda phone, with the others i have to type in an address. So I am hoping to hear from anyone who has done the east coast with virgin vodaphone or even optus.
I have also heard that mcdonalds have free internet connection. Is it safe. I could go for them in poor reception areas if they work there.
Thanks in advance for any advice

 Deb,
We have just retired,Clap so we looked at various options, such as internet cafes and as you mentioned mcdonalds, we wanted the flexibility and convenience that we could sit in the van and log on.
As Peter mentioned Telstra will probably have better coverage, although they do cost a little more for the same amount of GB.
We phoned Telstra and signed up for a 2 year Telstra Bigpond contract at $29 per month for 1GB, we received the wireless modem stick at no cost through the mail, if you have a number of connections with Telstra you will get more GB for that price, as we are not big uses of the web at this stage this will suite us.

Not all Mcdonalds have wifi, I tried one on the Gold Coast at Eleanora at Easter and they do not have it.

Hi Ray & Bev
We have just retired to & cant wait to be heading off. still a few things to organise. I think I will need more than 1 gig & i worry what it will cost to go over my quota plus I dont want to lock into a long contract, so I still have some investigating to do before I decide. thanks for your reply. Happy retirement

We have the Telstra nextG "turbo" usb modem with the Toshiba laptop.
Very happy with the internet speed, $29.95/month for 3gig. (system slows if exess used)
Pay upfront for modem, which is then credited back against monthly Telstra account over 3 cons. months, so modem is really no cost.
All set up by Telstra shop in Armidale (nsw)

Thanks Mike.
I will look into it. I would assume this is a 24 month contract. I always feel reluctant to sign on for that long with any company. If curcumstances change  contracts can make things difficult.

Hi, new here  but just noticed telstra has released prepaid wireless plans that last upto 6 months in response to their loss for business to the likes of optus and vodaphone who have good coverage on the east coast and in some instances large regional centers. If you feel unsure about signing up for a long contract try prepaid for a few months to see how much you use and then you can take a contract later. We have used vodaphone on a 12Gb prepaid for 12 months access and have been plesantly suprised at the level of coverage on the east coast whilst traveling for 3 months. Or go to whirlpool.net.au and look at the forum there as it is all people in the know.

you pay more but i would go with telstra next g. earlier this year we sent 6 weeks in tasmania travelling each day so we covered a lot of territory and had internet coverage 99% of the time. our mobile phones are with optus and only  worked in major towns that is hobart & launceston so we used skype . also have had trouble with optus on the inland highway in queensland from biloela woandon and south.

optus coiverage appears to be restricted to heavilly populated areas.
we went to them from telstra based on price. i guess you get what you pay for. once the contract is over we'll be back to telstra

Hi Deb, We have tried MacDonalds a couple of times, and let me tell you, a lot of patience is required, as we found it to be terribly slow.  Could have been the time of day - late afternoon.  Would have to be desperate to use it again, or have lots of time to kill.

Unfortunately if you are seriously going to travel around Oz there is only one choice, Telstra/Bigpond on the Next G network. We run this site from our van full time on the road and could be anywhere. Usually can get connected eg. we are currently at King Ash Bay near Borroloola NT about as remote as one can get. Have got the big stick up but here I am writing this post.

We couldn't do it with any other network.

I kind of worked that bit out LOL but was wondering how he arranged it.
I have a pre paid wireless set up but only a short USB cable to the modem. It would be nice to be able to extend it, so, is it just a matter of a longer USB cable and some weather protection for the modem?
Cheers

Hi
For my two bob's worth TELSTRA is the best at the moment. I do not practice what I preach ( I'm with 3 ) cheap works well in town but move out dead! We had e'll cheapo for phones. Now with Telstra I recon could even work on the moon.
No you cant beat telstra for cover but it does come for a price. You need to way up your need of priority. PS to weather proof your dongle on a usb cable just stick it a gald zip bag and tape around whallar!Clap
May your travels be fun and your wheels not fall off

We have a virgin usb wireless thing and it works pretty well. Once you start going outback it just disappears though. In the city and rural areas it works pretty well.

Hi Deb, take it from someone has tried the cheap option, the quality of the telstra service will remain long after the price is forgotton, nothing will come close to teltra service while travelling around. I have been camping at many remote locations like boorooloola and kakadu just to name two and nothing else will work, for me the internet is very important to stay in touch with family and business needs. Good luck. Pete

Jeff, we have a Telstra wireless broadband modem, when we purchased the modem stick  he showed us on the side of the modem stick there is a small socket we can plug in an external
aerial to gain better recption, the modem stick stays plug in the lap top and what ever type of aerial you choose is mounted out side with a cable connecting back into the modem and laptop.
Hope you understand what I mean!Handshake
