Welcome aboard Mickey.
My wife and I have a similar Golf, little bit later model.
Does a trip up north each year from Brisbane. We have taken it off road a lot of times over some pretty ordinary tracks and it just follows along like a bought one.
I think the main thing is to keep the speed down and drive to the road conditions.
Just home from 6000 km. trip this year.
On the highway I keep my tyre pressures up to about 45 psi.
Cruise at about 95kph. on most bitumen roads.
80 Series Diesel Cruiser, average from 16 - 20 l. per. 100ks.
Keep an eye on your independent suspension for a while at least, saw one recently that had been repaired but by the look of the van it had done some very hard miles.
There may be grease nipples under yours that need attention.
I have never heard of another failure and We have had two Golf Vans.
From my observations our van has done about 40,000 ks.

Thanks Haji-Baba, for your reply, will check independent suspension and grease nipple underneath. That is the information I am trying to find out about. Mine is a 1995 savannah has a toilet and shower in, it is 16ft. and only 6ft 6 wide fully loaded weighs 1650kg at the weigh bridge last week so I can tow it with my ford fairmont. Hope to head of around Australia soon, might be a bit squashy, but it has 2 single beds, hopefully we will be out all day and will only need a bed at night and as a bonus we have a shower and a toilet.
PS would you know what type of frame the Golf has aluminium or wood

Mickey, in reply to your first post, I haven't heard of a "Golf Club" as such.
I am also wondering if you made a typo, six foot six wide?. I can't remember seeing a van that width.
Our frame is alluminium and whilst there are some reservations in previous comments that I have read I can't see "meranti timber" being an option. Other timber types maybe.
That will stir a bit of comment.
As far as room is concerned if there is only two of you, you will find that a lot of time is spent outside under the awning watching the passing parade.
The single bunks are good for a little bit of extra room but limited exercise.
The only problems we have had so far, blew the 240 element on the fridge
and dropped a wheel magnet in a brake drum on the previous van.
I am also assuming yours is a single axel van.

 limited exercise ummm ,so much to learn about caravaning.got tape out ,yep,6ft 11in wide & has dual axle. maybe i have one of a kind . mickey

Has your Van got air bag suspension or coils with shockies?
Our first van was 7 foot 2 inches wide.
Interesting format with that width on yours.
Thinking about the wooden frame on some vans, there are at least two types of "meranti"
hardwood and softwood. I probably need to know a bit more about that.
