Doesn't time fly when you're having fun? Six weeks we have been here in Darwin and I'm not sure what we have done here. I know that we haven't seen or done everything
that there is to do here. We do that so we have a good excuse to come back again. After moving over from Lee Point to KOA we felt much better about hanging around and taking a
break from driving each day. The boat was unloaded and made ready. Maintenance was carried out on the Sterling and the Landcruiser in preparation for the next leg across the top and
down the west coast.
We caught up with quite a lot of folk that we have met over the past couple of years. Seems everyone is in Darwin at this time of the year. There was Brian and Trish, Ian and
Marilyn, Ros and Peter and Eric and Jodie [Kedron308]. They were all staying at different parks and it became a bi-weekly event to meet at the Mindil Markets each Thursday and Sunday
nights for rundown on what's been happening, a beverage or two and too much food from the huge array of food vendors at the market. If you don't go anywhere else in Darwin you must
do the Mindil Markets. Here's a tip, get there early as this place so popular that you won't get a parking space. With hundred of spaces available get there after about 5:30 and you will
be walking along way to the markets.
With a population of 120,000 Darwin is a pretty laid back place. Excellent road network with all major arterials four or six lane roads. One thing I noticed and I hope
they don't change is that signs are minimal, just what is needed, not a sign every 20 metres in your face. Very easy to get around and not a hint of road rage.
We didn't do much of the
touristy things, I think growing up on the Gold Coast has cured us of that.
One that we did do was to visit The Australian Aviation Heritage Centre. The main attraction here is the full size, working
(well it was when it flew here) B52 bomber, donated to the museum by the US. Dwarfed under the wings of the B52 are fighters from a Spitfire to a Mirage and Sabre.
There is also many exhibits from the air battles fought over Darwin in WWII. For the $12.00 fee we thought it was worth the money. A museum with a difference.
